Portland is the largest and most populous city in the state of Oregon. It began as a settlement in the 1830s near the end of the Oregon Trail and officially became an incorporated city in 1851. A major port for the Pacific Northwest, Portland sits along the convergence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Nicknamed the City of Roses and Bridgetown, the Portland cityscape is known for its many historic landmark bridges that connect its many distinctive western and eastern neighborhoods across the Willamette River.

The Oregon Cities and Towns Collection highlights the distinctive architectural traditions and geographic diversity across the state. In the 1840s, the Oregon Trail brought many new American settlers to the Oregon Country leading to the development of cities and towns across the region. The Oregon Territory was created in 1858 and became a state the following year. A majority of Oregon residents live within the Willamette Valley, a lush, fertile area dotted with vineyards, farmland, and the state’s largest cities and towns.
